Can I Build One App That Works on Different Smart TVs? A Norigin diary post.

(Thursday, July 3)

Short answer: Yes… but not without effort.

While you can choose to build individual apps for each Smart TV platform, it’s way more efficient to work from a single codebase. With technologies like React Native and purpose-built TV frameworks it’s possible to build and maintain apps that run across the full Connected TV (CTV) app universe from Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, VIZIO, Android TV, to Apple TV.

That said, each platform comes with its own setup, tooling, and certification process. For example, even a basic Samsung Tizen app requires installing their SDK, generating author and distribution signatures, and following strict packaging rules. Then guess what! LG webOS has its own whole set of tools and signing processes, and the same applies to Android and Apple TV platforms, each with their own runtime expectations. So while the development effort can be streamlined through a unified codebase, deployment isn’t exactly “plug-and-play”.

At Norigin Media we’ve built an approach around exactly this, combining a custom Smart TV SDK with a robust manual QA and certification process, so the same app code can pass store submissions across all major Smart TV platforms.
