It felt so good to be back in person for a conference after the “pandemic-hiatus”!

Last week, Norigin Media attended NextTV Series 7th Edition in Berlin, as a Gold Sponsor of the European event.

The two-day conference focused on the trends, innovation and strategies that drive Pay TV, Telecom and OTT services in an increasingly connected ecosystem.

Norigin Media CEO, Ajey Anand, participated in a Broadcasting and OTT panel, alongside Yuliya Daineko EMBA from A1 Telekom Austria AG, Justinas Docka from TV3 Group, Bruce Curtin from Irdeto and Mike Echternach from Deutsche Telekom, to discuss new opportunities for PayTV and Telecommunications within the OTT ecosystems.

The panel discussed the role of the TV operator as a “Super Aggregator” of streaming content for consumers. 

One of the main questions was around how broadcasters and Pay-TV operators were making OTT a “first” or parallel consumer offering, to reduce cannabilisation of other services.

This resulted in a heated debate about the relevance or need of both D2C services from broadcasters and operators.  

“Some people choose supermarkets and some people prefer smaller boutique shops. A few boutique stores close down quicker than others, while some others get absorbed by supermarkets. And that’s how you have to think of Consumer TV services, as any other commodity.

At the end of the day, there are different consumer needs and experiences needed, but there is a place for everyone”, Mr Anand said. 

It was also stated that the lines between Pay-TV Operators & Broadcasters are blurring more everyday and technology needs to better support UI/UX Design.

While international and local content are both important for TV or any commodity, consumers will complain either about the UI/UX or the content itself. 

Metaphorically speaking, Mr Anand said “The OTT Consumer offerings are like Supermarkets (Pay-TV operators or Aggregators). But there are large consumer groups that prefer to shop in smaller Boutiques (Broadcasters & niche streaming services). Everyone always has space in the expansive world of Streaming TV.”

Supermarkets and boutiques have their own place within a commodity-ecosystems, as do all broadcasters, pay-tv operators and OTT services.

Norigin Media was just excited to reconnect face-to-face and the conference was an inspiring place to discuss industry trends and key future challenges.
